HUGE Theater is closing at the end October after 14 years of providing improv classes, workshops, festivals, and performances in the LynLake neighborhood.

“With great sadness, the Board of HUGE Improv Theater has made the difficult decision to close HUGE permanently at the end of October,” reads an announcement posted to social media Thursday evening. “The reasons are complex, but they ultimately boil down to money.”

After moving a few blocks north on Lyndale Avenue into the Art Materials building last year, the improv theater has struggled to find continuous stable funding. A fundraiser launched in May raised money to cover unexpected costs related to construction and getting their new building up to code.

HUGE Theater leaders Butch Roy and Becky Hauser recently resigned, but the organization's board said their departures are not the reason for the closure.

“HUGE was already in a precarious financial situation, and there simply isn't a viable way forward,” Thursday’s announcement reads.

HUGE Theater’s full slate of shows and classes will continue as scheduled through October. HUGE Theater is located at 2728 Lyndale Ave S. HUGE Theater started producing shows in 2005 and opened its original theater at 3037 Lyndale Avenue in 2010.
