When walking into Sencha Tea Bar on Hennepin Avenue at 26th Street, you can’t miss the “Alice in Wonderland” decorations.

“We were trying to do an all-encompassing type of immersion,” Maren Findley, the location’s assistant manager, said. “It's very magical and whimsical.”

The Wonderland concept was designed by Sencha Tea Bar staff, many with art and theater backgrounds. And after a successful Harry Potter immersive experience at Sencha’s Grand Avenue location, it was time for the Hennepin Avenue location to jump down the rabbit hole.

Sencha Tea Bar, at 2610 Hennepin Ave. S, is offering Alice in Wonderland-inspired drinks, food, merchandise, and community events through September. But the experience is not limited to paying customers.

“It’s something that we wanted to do that would be fun for the community,” Damla Erten,

vice president of Sencha Tea Bar and the location’s manager, said. “You don't have to buy anything to come and check the installation out. Bring your kids.”

The immersive “wonderous eats” food menu includes sweet and savory tea sandwiches and Alice’s garden cake, all made “fresh and magical.” Drinks include the Cheshire Cat dragon fruit shake, the vanilla-based White Rabbit with a mushroom-shaped custard, and the sparkling and colorful Mad Hatter.

A limited edition “Drink Me” blue mango tea with edible gold flakes comes with a number that is automatically entered into a drawing to win the large Mad Hatter cutout in the shop and a free boba add-on or a free size upgrade for a month. A future “Drink Me” drawing will include the shop’s Cheshire Cat. Winners will be announced on Sencha Tea Bar’s social media in October.

The merchandise also flows along the meticulously-placed decor that gradually changes from light to dark as you move through the space. Near the Mad Hatter cutout are hats for sale and closer to the Cheshire Cat are the more “funky and fuzzy” pieces of merchandise, Findley explained.

“It’s more fun to look at that way, and then it's on theme in a way that is more cohesive,” Findley said.

An ongoing activity for visitors is to find a tiny Alice doll hidden in the shop. Her location changes often. Findley and Erten encourage people to tag pictures of her with #AliceAtSencha. The shop is also hosting Wonderland events, including free story and playtime and a ticketed mug decoration night with a screening of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

Erten said Sencha Tea Bar is “very big on connecting with the community” and providing a safe and welcoming environment.

“Doing something like this not only is going to bring people into the neighborhood that maybe otherwise wouldn't come into the neighborhood, which helps the overall perception and reputation of the neighborhood,” Erten said. “But for people that are already in the neighborhood, it’s providing something fun.”

Sencha Tea Bar’s 2610 Hennepin Ave. S location is open 10 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week.
