Practically Magical is a little bit of everything. A little bit vintage, a little bit upcycled, a little bit consignment. Throw in some butter taffy, locally-made jewelry, and tote bags with sassy messaging and you still aren’t through all the treasures in Abby MacFarlane’s store.
MacFarlane moved her shop from Saint Paul to Penn Avenue and 50th Street this fall and finds itself in a vintage and resale hot spot. Nu Look Consignment Apparel is across the street and a collection of vintage and antique stores are a half-mile west at 50th Street and Xerxes Avenue (see: Hunt & Gather, Queenie & Pearl, A Rare Bird, and Loft Antiques).
The move across the Twin Cities was due to the doubling of rent at her previous location but MacFarlane’s husband Ian is from Linden Hills so the location was an easy sell.
”He's happy to be back into his old stomping grounds,” MacFarlane said while Ian was on cash register duty during a visit on Small Business Saturday.
MacFarlane sells her own upcycled furniture creations amongst the homegoods, artwork, and bath and body products tucked around the store.
“I started to sell furniture as a way to make money out of the home, when I didn't have a job,” MacFarlane said. She continued the practice during the COVID-19 lockdown and was invited to be a vendor at Thistle in St. Paul, eventually opening up Practically Magical.
MacFarlane also offers space for vendors to sell their wares, and has space for more. The lower level of the space–all of which was formerly the flagship Lululemon store–has upcycled and thrifted clothing, a large collection of illustrated books, and handcrafted bags from a growing collection of vendors.
MacFarlane plans to offer art classes in the cozy back room of the store, including some taught by her 83-year-old aunt.
Practically Magical is located at 2309 W. 50th St. and is open Thursday-Saturday noon-7 p.m. and Sunday noon-5 p.m.
