A leak in the Metro Transit Green Line Extension dewatering system caused a sewage spill near Cedar Lake on March 28.

Metro Transit has confirmed that the sewage spill at Depot Street and St. Paul Avenue in late March was caused by a malfunction in the Green Line Extension construction’s dewatering system, which is connected to the area’s wastewater system. The dewatering system has helped keep water out of the light rail's tunnel and other construction areas.

“Based on bacterial results, the Met Council has determined there is no current risk to public health,” a Metro Transit spokesperson shared with Southwest Voices. “The Met Council will review the incident and plan for enhanced preventative practices.”
